The Fate of
Hotel Bora Bora? |
The iconic and world-renowned Hotel Bora Bora, first opened in 1961, has finally closed its doors in October 2008, after a long struggle to stay in business. (It's demise was no surprise and somewhat foreseen by many...)
Located near Bora Bora's famous Matira beach, the now defunct famous resort offered impressive views of the islands of Tahaa and Raiatea to the west, Maupiti to the east, the unique islet of Motu Toopua in the foreground, and the barrier reef in the distance.
The chimney peaks of Mount Otemanu and Pahia provided scenic backdrops to the resort’s three pristine beaches and have been photographed countless times by countless persons, vacationers and celebrities alike...
According to their managing company, Aman Resorts, they are undertaking a complete reconstruction of the hotel and plan on re-launching "in time for its 50th Anniversary". Whatever that means is anybody's guess and at this time its future success is purely speculative.
Because of its historical significance, TST divulges this information for those interested and wishes the resort well in their plans of revival.

 Some are quite luxurious, although slightly less so than the top of the line resorts listed above. Many are also not so luxurious, but what you'll save in dollars may end up being a worthy tradeoff. Listed below are refuges for those of you on a tight budget or wishing to save your hard earned money on various activities or Island hopping rather than on lodging.
Amenities can be a bit stark compared to some other more expensive places to stay on Bora Bora, but just because it's budget doesn't mean it isn't a great place to stay. Backpackers, students, long term travelers, or campers love these places... Accomodations are often simple bungalows, dorm style cottages or rooms utilizing communal style bathrooms, kitchens, and showers.
Camping areas all share the use of above mentioned amenities, unless you're really into roughing it, in which case you won't be staying at these areas anyway. (Go to our camping section for more info on camping in Tahiti Polynesia.) Hint for campers: Bring your own tent.
In our humble opinion, many of these budget accomodations are among the best places to stay on all the islands of French Polynesia due to their "family touch." They are the easiest places to have personal contact and interact with the islanders, which most people will find extremely rewarding. Most, if not all these accomodations are run by family members and they are often very friendly, outgoing, and interesting to meet for any traveler. Great sources of Island information, these locals also can help you organize the many island activities and sights you will be pursuing while on Bora bora.
