SEASONS & TYPE OF FISH AVAILABLE
After fishing the Leeward Society Islands for over 25 years, Captain Richard Postma has come up with the following observations:

Fishing Conditions
Type of gamefish:
Blue Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Skipjack Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Trevally, Jacks and Barracuda.
Also found but not as common: Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Shortbill Spearfish and Big Eye Tuna.

Weather conditions:
The best weather occurs during Spring and Fall in the southern hemisphere (late Sept. to late Nov. or late March to early June). We have steady east trade winds 12 to 18 knots during this period with an average temperature of 90F and average humidity of 90%.
Our summer, which is the rainy season, is from December to March. It does not necessarily rain all the time but it can rain hard during this period and the fishing is good.
The winds are mostly light N.E. and variable 8 to 10 knots except in rainsqualls where they can gust strongly. Temperature is 97F to 100F and humidity is 98%!
Our Winter is late June to early September. During this period we have strong S.E. trade winds, 25 to 30 knots, with cool and frequently gray skies. Sea conditions can be rough and fishing really slows down but Blue Marlin and Tuna can still be found.

Fishing conditions:
We enjoy approximately 9 months (Oct. to June) of good fishing. The optimal time for big fish and lots of action is from December to the first of June when the water is the warmest.
We always have our Inter-Island Fishing Championship somewhere between the end of February to the beginning of April. This is the period most locals call the best. The Society Islands are one of the few places in the world where you can catch Pacific Blue Marlin all-year-around.
The slowest time is late June, July and August when the water is the coldest and the roughest. The fishing grounds begin only one mile outside the reef where the water drops off to more than 1,000 meters.
The water conditions are generally mild with the exception of winter and occasional stiff trades during the other seasons. All in all, this is a very productive place to fish.
