AlwoplastNOTES FROM THE DESIGNER

Here are some notes (unedited) from the designer and builder of the Taravana catamaran, Alwoplast LTD, from Valdivia, Chile:

"Builders of the world's first sail game fishing catamaran "TARAVANA" ( 50 ft ) and her sister "TIARE" ( 57 ft ) now offer a brand new, Crowther designed 44 ft. version.

The Taravana under sail is a beautiful thing...The new boat is an extremely capable sail game fishing design incorporating a striking modern style, with the high payload, spec maneuverability and stability demanded by our clients for serious offshore fishing. She incorporates our proven bulb bows, canted inside hulls, straight stems, boarding platforms as well as a complete flybridge with all sail and engine controls, steering station and instruments. An easily operated, highly efficient fractional rig with fully battened mainsail and roller furling headsails enables shorthanded, easy sailing without compromising performance.

Two lightweight turbo-charged after cooled diesels with standard shaft installation and three bladed feathering propellers, provide speeds up to 15kts and pinpoint maneuvering. At long range trolling speeds of around 8 knots, she has a range of 500 miles under power. Combine this with the capabilities of sailing at windspeed from 10 knots to 20 knots and you have a fishing/exploration craft with no practical limits on range.

Fishing can be done either under sail or under power, just as easily. The main sail can be reefed down and used like a throttle for live bait speeds. It can also be controlled for whatever lure speed you like in winds of ten knots or above using the foil principal. All of the sail winches and rollers are controlled by the skipper from the bridge, out of the fishermen's way. From the bridge 12 feet above sea level, everyone has a great view of the action in the twin fishing cockpits below.

This is a powerful but easily handled and economic to operate vessel with features normally available only in much larger powerboats and rarely on yachts. Whether offshore or dockside, this is an impressive vessel for fishing, cruising, entertaining and recreation."
