Sailing and Boat Charters in French Polynesia

Charter Sailing Tours on Bora Bora Island!
Sunbathing on the Taravana...

French Polynesia offers world class sailing and private boat chartering and tour opportunities and the island of Bora Bora is one of its most popular destinations for many reasons. Bora Bora is the most heavily touristed of the Leeward Islands and this trend carries over to the water.

Located within sight (25 miles) of Polynesia's "sailing center" of Raiatea and Tahaa, there are a good many chartering options for the sailor or boating enthusiast to get to the island. Bora Bora also has the advantage of being closely situated to the Society Islands only full service boatyard, LE CARENAGE, on Raiatea.

But the real reason Bora bora is so popular as a boating destination is the island itself: Bora Bora is simply one of the most divine and famous jewels of the South Pacific- its multi-colored lagoon with its backdrop of sheer cliffs and mountains beckons to the ocean explorer.

Bora Bora has several choices for exploring her waters including sailing and yacht charters, private boat excursions and various packages for many different boating or sailing experiences you can dream of.
Cruise around the magnificent and legendary island of Bora bora on a daily charter or take one of the most unforgettable trips of your life as you venture away from the lagoon into the open ocean on a multi-day trip to explore the pristine waters of the Leeward Islands of Tahiti Polynesia.

This page is your starting guide for exploring the pristine waters of Bora Bora and the Leeward Islands of the Society archipelago of Tahiti Polynesia.

SAILING & BOAT CHARTERS

Sailing & Boat ChartersMost companies offering Bora bora as a sailing or boat charter destination operate and board out of Vaitape- Bora bora, or Uturoa- Raiatea.

Typical tours involve cruising around the island's beautiful, multi-color lagoon for a relaxing afternoon while snorkeling, scuba diving, picture taking, or swimming and picnicking on one of the nearby motus. Many are 1 to 4 day excursions with other Society Islands as secondary destinations after Bora Bora. No matter how long your sailing or boating trip may be, it's certain to be a memorable one!

Below is a list of sailing and boat charter companies for you to experience Bora bora and her surrounding waters with.

Sailing the Leeward Islands"Sailing the Leeward Islands is like being on the movie set of South Pacific. You'll find yourself singing shower tunes as you sail up to Apu Bay in Tahaa. You move for the night and have your first night's dinner at the little French restaurant there.

The spectacular profile of Bora Bora beckoned in the distance, and after an exciting long reach, you anchor at a "motu" off the western coast. Pictures of Bora Bora in late afternoon lights are just incredible. The Bora Bora lagoon is beautiful, a place you will like to get lost in for a long time.

As far as the nightlife goes, you'll enjoy Bloody Mary's first, a popular spot on the island. There are several beautiful anchorages on Raiatea, but the highlight is your dinghy adventure up the Faaroa River, surrounded by tropical jungle on both sides. A visit to the sacred religious site of Taputapuatea is also very interesting. From Raiatea, you sail over to Huahine, another thrilling reach over open sea."

MARINAS

Contrary to what sailors and yachtsmen may want to believe, there IS NO MARINA on Bora bora. One possible reason for this may be due to it's close proximity to Raiatea's sailing center and multiple marinas nearby. Certainly, there is a boating demand for a marina on Bora bora, but the island gets by fine without one and has for many years. That being said, the island DOES have quite a few good places to anchor and moor your boat. This easily enables vessels to stay more than a few days if they want, and many do.

If your boat needs repairs, parts, services, or to be drydocked, you will most likely end up in Raiatea utilizing all the boating and yachting facilities and services there.

Here, TST offers what information we have at the moment relating to marine and pertinent yachting and boating information for Bora Bora. Note that the
future of this page will offer more accurate details on these subjects, but for now known information is as follows:

Harbours/ Docking, & Mooreage

Although there is NO official PUBLIC HARBOUR to speak of on Bora bora, there are a few locations recognized by the public for mooring, anchoring, or docking your boat:

     1) The main dock at the Vaitape wharf can be used on a temporary basis for loading and unloading. There's quite a bit of boats wanting to dock here, so "temporary" is the key word here...

     2) The first and maybe most popular spot for mooring vessels is in front of the famous Bloody Mary's restaurant, where services are few but include water fillups, trash facilities, a dingy docking area, and a local card phone. It's probably not a stretch to say that over 90% of the boats mooring here have dinner or drinks at the restaurant. Long stays here are not permitted.

    3) Another public and popular place to anchor or moor vessels is the Bora bora yacht club. (see details below) Here, vessels from all over the world are permitted to stay for times of longer duration if necessary, (no drydocking) and can utilize the facilities for water fillups, electrical hookups, garbage disposal, and newly revamped restaurant and bar services among other things.

    4) You will also see yachts at various other random protected places within the lagoon waters.
A few favorites include anchoring in the protected waters of Motu Toopua, and just inside the Teavamoa Pass and to the South where there is a 30 foot sandy bottom and good holding
.

MARINE & YACHTING SERVICES

Bora bora has a limited selection of professional yachting or boating businesses and services for the same reasons it has no marina. (see above).

Theres one basic parts store called Marine Services located just west of Vaitape, but it focuses mostly on selling outboards and doesn't stock many marine supplies. If your boat needs repairs, parts, services, or to be drydocked, it's only 25 miles away to Raiatea and many options of good quality yachting services can be found there.

THE BEST SELECTION OF YACHTING & BOATING SERVICES CAN BE FOUND IN PAPEETE, TAHITI OR ON THE NEARBY ISLAND OF RAIATEA.
